Information for Kids

Are your parents constantly saying, "calm down?" If so, you must be feeling stressed! So are they! Here's what you need to know about stress, when you have lots of it and you are struggling, your brain's not working right. Your short-term memory is struggling to remember how to calm down. This part of the website is just for you... it's your memory tool to help you "calm down." Here are some ideas that you can use to calm your stress:

Breathe

You gotta breathe my friend!! If you don't, you will explode. Your behavior will express all the emotions that you are holding in. BREATHE!!

Draw/Color

Drawing and coloring can be very calming. These activities help give us a place to focus some of that stress.

Journal

Writing down our thoughts and feelings can be really helpful. Sometimes we stuff them so far inside of us that we can't get them out. We usually feel lots better when we get that stuff out. You can never offend a journal!!

Talk to a friend or an adult

Sometimes, sharing our stress with others can help us to regulate and feel better. Trusting someone with our emotions can help us heal too. Ask mom or dad to talk about your stress. You may be surprised, they may have experienced what you're stressed about already!

Listen to music/sing

Music often soothes our soul. Listening to music can help with managing your stress.

Exercise

Go for a walk or run, ride your bike, play, get sweaty!! Get your heart rate up. Get outside and connect with nature.

Cry

Crying often feels really good. Lots of us are scared to cry. Did you know that every time you cry, you are expressing an emotion. Expressing emotion is important and crying can help you express those feelings.

Laugh

Laughing is stressful, but it's the good stress. Try it!! You may just like it!!

Rest or take a nap

Listen to your body. Sometimes we just need to get away from all the stuff we are doing.

Get a hug

Our skin is our largest organ. We communicate through touch. Hugs can help us calm down right away. Don't be afraid to ask for a hug from your mom or dad or someone you care about. Animals give great hugs too! Sometimes getting a hug reminds us that there are other people to support us as well.

Be alone/meditate/pray

Being alone allows us to listen to our heart. Honor what is in your heart. That will calm your stress, too!

Once you calm your stress, the next step is to REFLECT!! What caused your stress? Is it something that you can change? Do you need some help with that? We must really be aware of what causes our stress so that we can express our emotions in a healthy way.
